Dead space

Last updated

The small volume of liquid left in the needle and syringe hub after injecting. Insulin syringes with a fixed (non-removable) needle have very little dead space, which reduces waste.

Dead space is the small residue trapped in the hub and needle that never gets injected, and over many draws it adds up to wasted peptide. Fixed-needle insulin syringes minimize it, which is one reason they are preferred for small, expensive doses. It is a subtle point the calculator does not model, so anyone counting doses tightly may find a vial yields slightly fewer full doses than the arithmetic predicts.
