Excipient
Last updated
An inactive ingredient included with a peptide for stability or handling — for example mannitol used as a bulking agent in some lyophilized vials.
Because an excipient adds to the visible powder in a vial, the amount of dry material a person sees is not a reliable guide to how much active peptide is present. A vial labelled 5 mg refers to the peptide, not the mannitol or other bulking agent alongside it, so calculations should always be based on the stated peptide mass rather than the apparent volume of powder.
