International Unit (IU)
Last updated
A measure of biological activity used for some substances (like HCG or HGH) instead of mass. It is not interchangeable with insulin “units” on a syringe.
The overlap in the word "unit" is a frequent source of error: an International Unit measures biological activity for substances like HCG or HGH and has no fixed relationship to the volume-based "units" printed on an insulin syringe. A reconstitution calculator built around milligrams and syringe units cannot convert an IU-labelled product without a substance-specific conversion factor first.
