Loading dose

Last updated

A larger dose at the start of a protocol to reach target levels faster, sometimes used with longer-half-life compounds before switching to a maintenance dose. See also frontloading.

A loading dose front-loads a protocol so target levels are reached sooner, after which a smaller maintenance dose sustains them; the concept overlaps closely with frontloading. In practical terms it means the opening injections draw more units than later ones, so a vial is consumed faster at the start even though its concentration never changes.
